Prince Leopold, known as ‘The Old Dessauer’, was sovereign of the small principality of Anhalt-Dessau, but as Imperial Field Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire, a reformer of the Prussian army and a Field Marshal, his influence extended far beyond its borders. Leopold was born 350 years ago, on 3 July 1676, as the ninth child of Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau and his Dutch wife Henriette Catharina of Nassau-Oranien, and as the long-awaited heir to the throne of the small Principality of Dessau.

An evening lecture organised by the Dessau-Roßlau Municipal Archives and the Dessau regional group of the Association for Anhalt Regional Studies is dedicated to this eminent Dessau prince, entitled ‘An Evening with Prince Leopold. Reflections on the ‘Alten Dessauer’” on Tuesday, 6 October 2026 at 6.00 pm at the Dessau Archive Network, Alter Wasserturm, Heidestraße 21. The programme will feature three short lectures on various aspects of Prince Leopold’s life and work. The speakers will be: Professor Dr Michael Hecht (Institute for Regional History, Halle/Saale), Dr Jan Brademann (Archive of the Evangelical Regional Church of Anhalt, Dessau-Roßlau) and Dr Frank Kreißler (Dessau-Roßlau City Archive).

Admission to this event is free.
